TERRESTRIAL SPECIES AT RISK IN ALBERTA
Awareness Handbook for Construction and Field Operations
Alpine Environmental Ltd.
The federal Species at Risk Act (SARA) came into full force in June 2004 and is a powerful piece of legislation with significant consequences for non-compliance. To help comply with both SARA and Alberta's Wildlife Act, Alpine Environmental Ltd. (Alpine) recommends that companies 1) educate their personnel regarding species at risk in Alberta and the federal and provincial laws protecting species at risk, and 2) adopt responsible management practices and policies related to the protection of species at risk.

- To assist our clients, Alpine has developed a unique handbook titled Terrestrial Species at Risk in Alberta: Awareness Handbook for Construction and Field Operations. The handbook is intended to educate and direct proponents to key sources of information related to species at risk for consideration when planning projects and working in Alberta. This handbook provides the following:
- information on the provincial and federal legislation protecting species at risk
- a step-by-step process to identify potential species at risk (i.e. a risk based approach) in any part of the province
- descriptions (e.g., photographs, distribution maps, important habitats) of terrestrial species at risk in Alberta, specifically vascular plants and wildlife listed under Alberta's Wildlife Act and/or Schedule 1 of SARA
- direction on how to collect wildlife and species at risk information needed to complete an Environmental Field Report
- key government contacts and important links to information sources and best practice guidelines
